Science to the rescue of art?
Contemporary artistic creation seems to be increasingly nourished by aesthetics and scientific methods. The duty of permanence and irrefutability of science makes it a new Eldorado for artistic creation, which seems to find something greater than itself, a new god marked with the seal of truth as a search engine. Art, known as a unique expression of our biological specificity, draws by its phenomenon a primary function of this strange animal that we are, physiologically constituted to imagine, to tell, but also, to believe.
Focused on a relationship between fiction and reality, these two fields, art and science, propose hypotheses of understanding and manipulation of the world that it is legitimate to question. When Art is inspired and shaped by contact with the so-called « hard » sciences in the same way as society, it is legitimate to ask what power is thus attributed to science? Are we at the level of sorcerer’s apprentices, and can a counter-power be opposed to it? against terror and its untiring weapon, in spite of their personal tears, all men who, not being able to be saints and refusing to admit the « ideals », nevertheless decide to become doctors.
SALON SOUTERRAIN is a format created by Elisabeth Bakambamba Tambwe in 2018 as a response to the unbridled accentuation of the exclusionary dynamics, which have become the prerogative of our societies in Europe.
In 2019, Lena Fankhauser, funder of music (CH)AMBER became cooperation partner and is curating the orchestral music program (trio, quartet ,ensemble).
Cléo Duplan, founder of « Les Lunes Bergers », a publishing house assists by creating books-objects that offers a stage space to take away. The totem object in limited series represents in a device of reading-manipulation the heart of each problematic dealt by Salon Souterrain.
This platform of debate is a dive into knowledge or different understandings of and approaches towards knowledge. It is a place of hospitality, a melting pot of people, styles, ideas and a modest path engaged in the systematic practice of dialogue. At the same time by looking at works of all forms of artistic expression, but also with the voice and presence of contemporary thinkers: writers, philosophers, ethnologists, activists, scientists …
Elisabeth Bakambamba Tambwe is a choreographer, performer and visual artist based in Vienna, Austria. Born in Kinshasa (DRC) she grew up in France where she studies Fine Arts. In 1998 she obtains her Master degree in Plastic Arts with honors for her work of sculpture at the Tourcoing School of the Arts (FR). Her reflection in Fine Arts is based on organic architecture and her choreographic work is essentially oriented towards the sensitive and fragile dimension of the body. At the center of her work lies the critique of the concept of normality that she considers tyrannical and degrading. As a performer she was collaborating among others with Robyn Orlin, Serge-Aymé Coulibaly, Oleg Solimenko, Esther Socker and Monika Gintersdorfer / La Fleur. Her latest works have been shown among other at brut Wien, Künstlerhaus Wien, Tanzquartier Wien, donaufestival Krems, Wiener Festwochen, Afro_Vibes Festival, Julidans festival Amsterdam …
Lena Fankhauser is a violist born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She has received both her Bachelor and Master’s degree from the Julliard School in New York City. She moved to Austria for post- graduate studies with viola Professor Thomas Riebl at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and subsequently played with the Camerata Salzburg. Mrs. Fankhauser has toured worldwide, across numerous genres, and played in many halls including, New York’s Carnegie Hall, Suntory Hall in Tokyo and the Royal Albert Hall in London.As a passionate chamber musician, Lena Fankhauser founded a Chamber Music Festival in Bad Ischl (KMF Bad Ischl) and an association for new chamber music, (CH)AMBER. She has played in many festivals, including the Salzburger Festspiele, Carinthischen Sommer and the Donaufestival and in the orchestras of the Wiener Volksoper, Klangforum Wien and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Since 2013 she is a member of the Koehne Quartet, specializing in contemporary music. Since 2017, she is present on the stage of the Burgtheater, most recently in “Die Bakchen.” She regularly performs with the Munich Philharmonic and the Vienna Staatsoper Orchestra. Since May 2019 Lena Fankhauser became Elisabeth Bakambamba Tambwe’s partner in the Salon Souterrain by currating the Music (ensemble orchestra.,quartet or trio )
The Schoenberg Trio was born when three musicians, Johannes Fleischmann, Lena Fankhauser and Philipp Comploi were brought together as a string trio to open the Lower Austrian’s 2019 Haydn Festival. This gave rise to a regular musical partnership that encompasses music from Haydn to their namesake Schoenberg and well beyond.

Johannes Fleischmann, born and raised in Vienna, Austria, epitomizes the young and aspiring artists of this vibrant city. As the “Viennese Violinist” he has developed a remarkable repertoire – consisting of hidden beauties and highly-valued treasures of varied eras. His versatility and passion for chamber music are evident in multiple collaborations with celebrated musicians like Norman Shetler, Hyung-ki Joo, Roger Vignoles, Ryoma Takagi, José Gallardo, Julius Berger, Christopher Hinterhuber, Mariko Hara-Haselsteiner, Christoph Ulrich Meier, the „NWCS – Neue Wiener Concert Schrammeln“ and the „Symphoniacs“.
Since his solo debut of the Brahms Violin Concerto at the Wiener Konzerthaus Fleischmann has been appointed by the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as ambassador for the NASOM «New Austrian Sound of Music» program and as the artistic director of the renowned Palais Coburg. As a chamber musician, he has shared the stage with numerous celebrated artists and performed in famous concert halls like Wiener Musikverein, Wiener Konzerthaus, the great hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, Philharmonie im Gasteig Munich, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Brucknerhaus Linz and the Flagey in Brussels.
In 2020, Johannes Fleischmann will perform, inter alia, at Musikverein Vienna and will present his concert series at MuTh as well as a new record of sonatas by E. W. Korngold and E. Zeisl.
Philipp Comploi, A native of Salzburg, began receiving cello lessons at the age of seven. He studied under Susanne Riebl at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and under Rudolf Leopold at the Graz University of Music.
Along with his concertizing with the TRIO ALBA, Comploi is a sought-after leader and soloist in orchestras and ensembles specializing in performing on historical instruments such as the La Folia Baroque Orchestra, Wiener Akademie, Bach Consort of Vienna, Delirio Ensemble and Quadriga Consort. His work with Reinhard Göbel, Martin Haselböck, Christophe Coin, Andreas Lindenbaum, and Martin Hornstein has contributed significantly to his artistic development.
Performances as a soloist and chamber musician have taken Comploi throughout Europe and to China, Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Argentina, including performances at the Salzburg Festival as well as the Musikverein and Konzerthaus in Vienna.
In 2014 he was invited to give a baroque cello master class at the Frédéric Chopin University in Warsaw.
Philipp Comploi has made numerous recordings for Harmonia Mundi (SONY Classical), MDG, Carpe Diem und Capriccio as well as for the Austrian National Broadcasting (ORF) and the Italian National Broadcasting (RAI).

Elena Agudio is a Berlin based art historian and curator. Her research is focused on the sharing and exchange of knowledge and skills across disciplines and cultures. She studied Art History at the University of Venice – Ca’ Foscari and in 2010 she received her PhD in Contemporary Art and Design. From 2005 to 2010 she lectured in Milano at Politecnico and Iulm University and at the University of Architecture of Palermo. Since 2007 she is writing for and coordinating the direction of the Italian art magazine Art e Dossier. In 2013 she has been appointed artistic co-director of SAVVY Contemporary, a non-for profit Berlin based art space founded by Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung, situating itself at the threshold of notions and constructs of the West and non-West, primarily to understand and negotiate between and to deconstruct the ideologies and connotations eminent to such concepts. Since 2012 she is also artistic director of the Berlin non profit association Association of Neuroesthetics (AoN)_Platform for Neuroscience and Art, a project in collaboration with the Medical University of Charité and the Berlin School of Mind and Brain of the Humboldt University, for which she has curated projects at the Deutsche Guggenheim (Berlin), at the Library of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection (Venice), at the Deutsches Studienzentrum (Venice), HALLE 14 (Leipzig), OHBM.

Lucie Strecker is an artist and researcher in the field of hybrid arts. She is a fellow of the Berlin University of the Arts and holds a senior postdoc position at the Art & Science department of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, conducting the FWF Elise Richter PEEK project: “The Performative Biofact.” Works and performances have been shown inter alia at, the House of World Cultures, Berlin, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Omaha, USA, Beall Center for Art and Technology, Irvine, USA, the Museum of Natural Science, Vienna, the 21er Haus, Vienna, Click Festival for Art, Science and Technology, Helsingør, Denmark, Onassis Cultural Center, Athens, Muffathalle Munich, Vienna Künstlerhaus, ISEA Manizales, Colombia, and Ars Electronica Linz. Her work was honoured with the Performing Science Award in 2011 and with the Prix Ars Electronica – Honorary Mention in 2015. She has had lectureships at the Berlin Inter-University of Dance and the Berlin University of the Arts, College for Performing Arts, giving seminars on experimental settings in the arts and sciences. Additionally she has published texts in Performance Research, Diaphanes and The Lancet: Psychiatry
Marie-Luce Nadal lives and works between Paris and Catalonia. In constant search for new experimental sites, Marie-Luce Nadal draws her inspiration from the exploration of natural spaces as well as immersion in scientific laboratories. In recent years, his research has been to interpret and construct artificial landscapes from the observation of natural environments and phenomena, especially the metrological ones – all engines of fascination to transcend a form of misunderstanding. that the world, in its immensity, sometimes returns. She is specifically interested in the impact that any fluid, evanescent and ephemeral material can have on a chosen environment, and the conditions of its perception by the spectator, which attributes to them an aesthetic, poetic, even enigmatic character. The dynamics, the flows and their interactions, the movements at work in the universe, underlie an interrogation inherent to his approach: how to capture the air, to possess the elusive? Driven by this questioning, she develops machines and processes, borrowing from the formal vocabulary of science, to bring out phenomena or their evocations, as mysterious as evanescent. Through sensitive devices, she strives to create new scale relationships to our environment to solicit, without moralization, the conscience of each and to account for the existence of what we do not see.
Laurent Derobert, Doctor in economics and researcher, develops existential mathematics and questions our relationship to the world by producing equations that are so many poems, mathematical haikus. The purpose of the artist is to recapture unexplored fields of consciousness and human relationships. From one formula to the other, it is a question of reducing our inner labyrinth, this labyrinthine distance that separates us from ourselves, from what we believe to be, from what we dream of being.
lives and works in Marseille, she graduated in scenography from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris in 2013, then in 2017 she completed a professional Master II in art publishing and artist’s book at the Jean Monnet University of St Etienne. Recently, she founded Les Lunes Bergers, a publishing house dedicated to the creation and production of books-objects, artists’ objects in paper, and multiples of small series. In 2019, she did a first residency at the Maison des auteurs d’Angoulême, where she developed an editorial project straddling contemporary drawing, always affirming her desire to combine editorial design, drawing and installation and not to compartmentalize her practices.
Bisi Lalemi is a qualified psychological counsellor/psychotherapist..born in London of Nigerian parents…After qualifying in Psychology with Honours at Middlesex University, in London , she worked as a Group Therapist,at the renowned therapeutic community..the Henderson Hospital..part of the National Health Service in the UK..with people who had been physically,emotionally,and sexually abused as children. After qualifying as a psychological counsellor she started her own counseling practice shortly before moving to Austria where she has lived for 15 years…she runs a private practice for individual counseling and facilitates a Group for POC dealing with emotional and psychological issues. Bisi Lalemi is also an Anti Racist and Cultural Awareness trainer and has run workshops for NHS staff in London, Liverpool Police Dept., Schools in Salzburg and for the SFC in Vienna.
Alexander Nikolic, Artist, Filmmaker, Performer and Researcher, Theatermacher, Kunstarbeiter und Aktivist. Initiator von internationalen Projekten, wie Under the Bridge – Belgrade, SLUM-TV, BOEM*; BOEM* wurde 2011 mit einer Prämie im Bereich interkultureller Dialog, vom Ministeriumfür Unterricht, Kunst und Kultur ausgezeichnet. In Zusammenarbeit mit der Akademie der Bildenden Künste organisierte er Forschungsprojekte wie Serious Pop, künstlerische Appropriation in Südost Europa. Jahrelange interdisziplinäre internationale Erfahrung im Bereich, Produktion von Öffentlichem Raum, Partizipative und selbstermächtigende Strategien im Bereich Kunst und Kultur. Internationale Vorträge an Akademien und Universitäten. Mit dem BOEM* Mitaufrufer zu dem transnationalen Migrantinnenstreik „1.März“, Im Boem wurde auch die Arbeit niedergelegt. Mitinitiator der Wiener Wahl Partie. Seit drei Jahren sind seine Arbeiten auch verstärkt in internationalen Theaterfestivals, wie z.b. Donaufestival, Wiener Festwochen, Steirischer Herbst, Life-Art Festival Hamburg, CPH-DOX Copenhagen, Festival für Politik im Freien Theater, u.a. zu sehen. Oft auch nicht zu sehen, oder unter Pseudonymen, und auch mittendrin.
Silvia Bulgheresi is Assistant Professor of Environmental Cell Biology and Principal Investigator in three Austrian Science Fund (FWF) projects at the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Vienna. Since 2008, she has been teaching Microbial Symbioses and Epigenetics in the frame of several lecture and seminar series and in 2014 she received the venia docendi in Molecular and Cell Biology. Her research on symbiont reproduction challenged long-established biology tenets and was published in high-ranking journals such as Nature Microbiology, Nature Communications and Current Biology. Silvia was invited speaker at several world-renowned scientific meetings, including four GRC Frontiers of Science and two American Society of Microbiology meetings.
Cedrik Fermont Jean Muabantu – known as C-drík or Kirdec, he was born in Zaire, Democratic Republic of Kongo, and lives at the moment in Berlin. C-drík grew up in Belgium and lived in Netherlands before he moved to Germany. He studied electroacoustic music in Belgium, under the direction of Annette Vande Gorne. Cedrik Fermont is, since 1989, active in several music projects such as Črno Klank, Axiome, Tasjiil Moujahed as well as a solo artist. He has collaborated with dozens of musicians from the free improvised, noise and electroacoustic music scenes. He is the manager for SyTrphe, an online platform for alternative musicians from Asia and Africa.
Marino Formenti, pianist, conductor, performer. Praised by the LA Times as „a Glenn Gould for the 21st Century“. Beyond his activity on the concert stage he conceives performances of fairly different kind, durational, intercultural, systemic and/or interactive.
Projects: « Liszt Inspections » (Top 10 Recordings of The New Yorker 2014, Top 10 Performances of The New York Times 2015). In NOWHERE (Berlin, Bruxelles, Buenos Aires etc.) he lives and plays for several weeks in the same public space. ONE TO ONE (Art Basel) is a performance for and with only one visitor.

David Pujadas Bosch
geboren in Barcelona, lebt und arbeitet in Wien, hauptsächlich im Bereich Film und Video, aber auch Fotografie, Illustration, Performance und Soundinstallation. Hat von 2009 bis 2017 für PARADIGMATA – Zeitschrift für Menschen und Diskurse – illustriert, geschrieben und Buchhaltung geführt neben anderen redaktionellen Tätigkeiten wie Layout, Lektorat, Vertrieb, u.a. Seit 2017 kollaboriert mit der Theatergruppe TWOF2+dascollectiv bei ihr multimedialen Bühnenarbeiten und ist gerade dabei einen fiktiven Kurzfilm über Hieronymus Bosch und dessen Darstellungen von Musik in der Hölle fertig zu drehen.
Claudia Sandoval Romero is a journalist and artist from Colombia who currently lives and works in Vienna. She works with media such as photography, text and video and for her artistic production she combines sociological methods with collective creation. Her work consists in a reflection around the dynamics within the art field. She counts with a bachelor in Media Studies by the Valle University in Colombia, a master in New Media by the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, a master in Critical Studies by the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and she is currently writing her dissertation in philosophy at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna.
Eugenia Maximova is a Bulgarian-Austrian photographer and visual artist based in Vienna. She has a master’s degree in journalism- and communication studies from The University of Vienna. Eugenia Maximova sets out to explore the interconnections between political realities and the private lives of people, how identity is formed in different cultural settings. Eugenia Maximova has published several books and was featured among the 100 photobooks in « How We See: Photobooks By Women” (2018) published by 10×10 Photobooks. Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions in a large number of countries. She has also given talks and has taught several workshops on photography.
