On the edge of the 22nd district, there is a square that hardly anyone knows about – even though its name carries global political significance: United Nations Square. There, you stand in front of the UN. No one says a word here; the wind blows strongly and all is quiet. All around are skyscrapers, glass, concrete, security zones, cameras, big business and international politics. On the square itself: a black church with a perforated steel façade, but an interior entirely of wood and filled with light.
“UNPLATZ” is a multi-year project that creates public engagement through artistic and architectural installations and performative interventions. For this place lacks not architecture, but meaning. Spaces for discourse and pop-up formats address precisely this, and after 25 years, reflect on the UN City not merely as a security zone and extraterritorial space, but as a shared place.
